Correction, Chris... Cabrera would've probably been our back up had Boston not made Nomar available, but as it stands it was a four-team trade. Follow along...
Cubs-Twins: Justin Jones for Doug Mientkewicz
Cubs-Sox: Alex Gonzalez, Francis Beltran, Brendan Harris, Doug Mientkewicz for Nomar Garciaparra, Matt Murton and cash
Sox-Expos: Alex Gonzalez, Francis Beltran, Brendan Harris for Orlando Cabrera
Bottom Line... Cubs upgraded at short while only trading away one big leaguer, swapping Gonzo's glove for Nomar's bat, but keeping the current lineup and rotation intact for the Wild Card race.
Nomar performed admirably on defense in today's win and hit 1 for 4, notching up his first NL RBI. With a no-decision today, we'll have to wait another week for Mad Dog's next shot at 300.
For what it's worth, Cabrera did homer in his first at-bat in Boston's loss today. And I see Gonzo's on the bench for the Expos at the Marlins.
